What does the Bible say
about Jehovah and Jesus?
I.
Jehovah
–LORD in the Bible is referred to as the Creator.
Genesis 2:7 “And the LORD
God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Jehovah created man. In Zechariah
12:1 “…saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the
foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”
Isaiah 40:28 “…that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth….”
Isaiah 45:11-12 “…Thus
saith the LORD, … I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my
hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.”
In John 1:3-4 refers to Jesus as the Creator. “All
things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was
made. In him was life; and the life was
the light of men.” It says that ALL
things were made by the Word which verse 14 identifies as Jesus. This does not mean some things, it means ALL
things. Colossians 1:15-17 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
For by him were all things created,
that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they
be thrones or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created
by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things
consist.”
In Hebrews 1:2 and 10
refers to Jesus as the Creator. “Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his
Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the
worlds;” “And, thou Lord, in the
beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works
of thine hands:” In verse 8 God refers to His Son as God. “But unto the Son he
saith, Thy throne, O God , is for ever and ever…”
II.
Jehovah—LORD
in the Bible is referred to as the one whose way is being prepared. Isaiah 40:3 “The voice of him that crieth in
the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.” This verse was fulfilled in Matthew
3:3 and Luke 3:4-6 where John the
Baptist preaches about Jesus, “For
this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one
crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths
straight.” “As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet,
saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the
Lord, make his paths straight … And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” It is also referred to in Mark 1:1-3 and John
1:23
III.
Jehovah—LORD is become our salvation.
Isaiah 12:2 “Behold, God is my salvation: I will trust and not be
afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my
salvation.” Jesus
is referred as our salvation in the New Testament in several passages of
Scripture. Acts 4:10-12 “...that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the
dead, … Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” When Simeon saw and held baby Jesus he said
in Luke 2:30, “For mine eyes have seen thy salvation.” II Timothy 2:10 “…that they may also obtain
the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”
IV.
Jehovah—LORD and Jesus are both
referred to as the Saviour.
Isaiah 43:11 “I, even I,
am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior.”
Isaiah 45:21-22 “…who hath told it from that time? Have not I the LORD?
And there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none
beside me. Look unto me, and be ye
saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”
Titus 2:13 “Looking for
that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour
Jesus Christ.”
V.
The meaning of the name Immanuel is God with us. Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary was the child
who was referred to as “God with us.”
Isaiah 7:14 “There the
Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, ad bear a
son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth
a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God
with us.” II Corinthians 5:19 “To wit,
that God was in Christ, reconciling
the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; …”
VI.
Jehovah and Jesus have the same title, “the mighty
God” and “Almighty God”. Isaiah 10:21 refers to Jehovah as the mighty God.
Isaiah 9:6 is a prophecy about Jesus, “For
unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be
upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The
mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” This verse also calls Jesus the everlasting
Father giving Him the attribute of being eternal. Jehovah—LORD is called the Almighty God in
Genesis 17:1 “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared
to Abram, and said unto him, I am the
Almighty God: walk before me, and be thou perfect.” Jehovah—LORD is called Almighty God many times
in Scripture. Jesus is referred to as
the Almighty in Revelation 1:8, “Even so, Amen.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”
VII.
Jehovah
and Jesus are eternal and not created. Psalm 90:1-2 tells us “LORD, thou
hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or
ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to
everlasting, thou art God.” Micah 5:2 is
a prophecy concerning Jesus. “…yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that
is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from
everlasting.” Matthew 5:4-6 identifies
this prophecy was about Jesus.
In Psalm 102: 18-27 refers to Jehovah-LORD as the creator
in verse 25-26, “Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the
heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure:
yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change
them, and they shall be changed.” And in
verse 27 is says, “But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.” Hebrews 1:10-12 applies these verses in
Psalm 102 to Jesus. “And, Thou,
Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens
are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they
all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up,
and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not
fail.” Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for
ever.”
VIII.
Jesus and Jehovah are one. John 10:30, 38 “I and my Father are
one.” “Bui if I do, though ye believe
not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in
me, and I in him.” Jesus prays, John
17:5, “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory
which I had with thee before the world was.” John 17:11 “…they may be one as we
are.” See also verses 21, 22. In John
20:28 Thomas refers to Jesus as “My Lord and my God.” Jesus does not rebuke him for calling him God
but commends him in verse 29. John 5:18
says “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had
broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal
with God.” I John 5:7 “For there are
three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and
these three are one.” Colossians 2:9 “For in him dwelleth all the
fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
IX.
Jehovah and Jesus are referred to as
“the first and the last” and “the king of Israel.”
Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith
the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there
is no God.” John 1:49 “… Rabbi, thou
art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.” Revelation 1:8 says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:13-18 describes the Son of
man. Verse 17 says, “And when I saw him,
I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid
his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not: I am the first and the last:”
X.
The same thing is said about bowing to
Jehovah—LORD and Jesus.
Isaiah 45:21-23 “…who
hath told it from that time? Have not I the LORD? And there is no God else beside me; a just God and a
Saviour: there is none beside me. Look
unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is
none else. I have sworn by myself, the
word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that unto
me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.”
Philippians 2:9-11 “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,
and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and
things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory for God the Father.”
XI.
Isaiah 8:13-14 calls Jehovah—LORD the
stone that causes men to stumble and the rock that makes them fall. In Romans 9:32-33 this is applied to Jesus.
Isaiah 8:13-14 “Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your
fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a
stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for
a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.”
Romans 9:32-33 “… For
they stumbled at that stumblingstone: As it is written, “Behold I lay in Sion a
stumblingstone and rock of offence; and whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed.” Also see Psalm 118:22 and I
Peter 2:6 -8.
XII.
Jehovah—LORD and Jesus is the Redeemer.
Psalm 130:7-8 “Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the
LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his
iniquities.”
Titus 2:13-14 “Looking
for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
iniquity, and purify unto himself, a peculiar people, zealous of good
works.” Notice also that Jesus is called
the great God.
XIII.
Jehovah—LORD and Jesus is Judge.
God Jehovah—LORD is
Judge.
Psalm 50:1-6 “The mighty God, even the Lord, hath
spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down
thereof.2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath
shined. 3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a
fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.
4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth,
that he may judge his people. 5 Gather my saints together unto
me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. 6 And
the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself.
Selah.”
Psalm
96:13 “Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he
shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.”
Psalm
98:9 “Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness
shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.”
Jesus
is Judge
John
5:22-23 “ For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all
judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son,
even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the
Father which hath sent him.”
Acts 10:38-42
“ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and
with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of
the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all
things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they
slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day,
and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto
witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after
he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto
the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the
Judge of quick and dead.”
Romans
14:10b “for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.”
II
Corinthians 5:10 “
For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ;”
